Site Meter And Malware

Some of you may or may not have noticed that I have posts missing. There are few things worse than all of a sudden finding or seeing an issue with your site and having to pull it all apart piece by piece only to find out as well that you did not back it up well enough also. Learn from me people.

I all of a sudden had issues with my site redirecting after a few seconds to several different sites that I have nothing to do with. I use GoDaddy for hosting, so I contacted them immediately to see if it was something happening on their end. No company is perfect and things happen.

Nope, not them but they did see the redirects happening. They gave me some “ideas” or shall we say suggestions on what steps to take next. Again, it did not fix it. I was pulling my hair out, going through all aspects, widgets and plugins, themes…all of it. Nothing.

Then I got on Twitter to see if there was any help there. I saw something in German and another post in English that talked briefly of Site Meter and a redirecting malware. After 11 LONG hours I figured it out. The problem is Site Meter. Which is sad. I’ve been using Site Meter for many, many years to get my site stats, on all my sites, not just this one. So apparently Site Meter was recently bought and whomever has taken over has allowed such things to happen. Don’t bother trying to ever contact them for any reason, they will not respond.

All I can tell you, is as soon as I removed their code from my site, the issues went away completely and there has been nothing since. No weird redirects or odd behavior. So, in case you all of a sudden have this issue, I wanted to put this out there to help others. No more Site Meter for me. I no longer trust the company is run how it used to be and really, who would want to stick with a company that puts malware in their products.

If you have any questions or need help, feel free to Contact Me and I will help you as much as I can.

In the end I lost some hours in a frantic furry and lost a few posts but thankfully it was not worse and something I was able to figure out and take care of.

I spent most of the weekend scraping them off 19 years’ worth of accumulated pages. If they’ve turned to the Dark Side, they can do it without me.

Oh wow! So sorry. I used Sitemeter for so many years, thankfully was not so hard for me but I did loose all my posts that I wrote recently, so that was annoying. I am not happy that it came to this after so long..
